about

Julian Stanczak’s work helped define the Op Art, or “perceptual” art movement of the 1960’s. Since that time, Stanczak continued to make groundbreaking work primarily in Cleveland, where he was a professor at the Cleveland Institute of Art from 1964 - 1995. "Julian Stanczak: Recent Work" celebrated the artist’s ongoing investigation of perception. Featuring three large-scale, multi-panel paintings and a suite of smaller black-and-white canvases, this body of work challenged the viewer’s visual acuity as it questioned physical boundaries and how the viewer perceived the interactions of color, line, and form. This exhibition was curated by Indra K. Lacis, an Emily Hall Tremaine curatorial fellow, and was organized by MOCA Cleveland. This exhibition was generously underwritten by Miller Goler Faeges LLP.
