about

Works shown in the exhibit, "The Cuba Project", were created by five contemporary Cuban artists including Abel Barroso, Alex Hernandez, Osmeivy Ortega, and the collaborative team of Meira Marrero and Jose Angel Toirac. These works shared a compelling commentary on aspects of Cuban culture and its relationship to the rest of the world: economic conditions such as poverty and shortages; Cuba's place in a global context; the ethnic, racial and religious mixture, or syncretism, that constitute Cuba's particular culture; and the contrasts between the institutionalized notions of a national society and the realities lived by its citizens. These artists were chosen based on their participation in a larger cultural project centered at the Cleveland Institute of Art, which involved other institutions and spanned many years. "The Cuba Project" was curated by guest curator, David C. Hart. This exhibition was made possible by generous support from The Cleveland Foundation, Creative Fusion, Rebecca Dunn, Char and Chuck Fowler, and Donna and Stewart Kohl.
